in a lovely pensive, poetic state of mind lately.

things i can probably (in part) attribute this to: spring’s long-awaited advent, silence but for the birdsong, being close to graduation but having no cigar to show for it (read: job), the reappearance of the quilt in place of the comforter, gentle breezes, dewy humidity, road trip to Annapolis tomorrow, the avoidance of intimidating assignments, and that i’m currently reading A Severe Mercy.

thus, during evolution today, i mentally composed these two haiku poems:

steubenville spring

tiny leaves unfurl

flowers release their fragrance

some fair but most foul

the harbor beckons

springtime Love soon in your arms

as i was walking home tonight, through little drips of rain and winds roaring through the trees, i was struck by how connected i often feel to the world around me. i love being outside. the two places where i feel the most at peace and do my best thinking are outside and in churches. i feel that, in a way, the natural world is in a sense a cathedral. the word ‘cathedral’ comes from the latin ‘cathedra’ meaning ‘chair’. so just as a cathedral is the chair of the bishop, the earth is in a way the chair of the human race.

i was also thinking about how well the weather lately has been matching up with my interior life. it was such a blustery and rainy day today, and the past couple days have been filled with unseasonable weather: 60 degree sun and rain sandwiched in between single digit snowy days. The stress of my senior seminar coming up soon, and the unsteady start the semester has gotten off to has culminated in my feeling extremely disheveled, unorganized, spacey, anxious, and stressed. these characteristics are certainly not me, they are the unseasonable weather in my life.

i need the Lord to calm the sea. i need to regain peace.
